I have a LG 36″ LCD 1080p HDTV and I was wondering how much power is still being used when I turn off the power on the TV but it remains plugged into the wall? If someone could give me the comparison of when it’s on versus off that would be great too. Thanks so much

Normal stand-by mode for TV’s are in the tenths of a watt or .1 watt.

It’s as close to nothing a TV will use!

For a 36″ LCD TV to be on, the typical wattage is around 125 watts. That’s a little over $ 2 a day if on for 5 hours a day!

Just wondering…
All our TV’s are HD but we don’t get a HD picture as we don’t have the SKY HD box we only have the normal digital sky box. I was planning on getting one but just wanted to know if it’s worth the extra money each month.

So is there a big difference in picture quality?

Greta: Thanks for your answer but that was my question (probably should’ve worded it differently) should I get the ‘HD converter box’ we call it a SKY HD box.. I wanted to know if the picture would be much better than the normal analog picture. I know that I’m not viewing a HD picture at the moment despite the fact that my TV is HD. Thanks.

To me, yes. A resounding YES. Some people don’t see or appreciate the difference though. My elderly parents for example, they see the difference but they don’t care too much about tv so it isn’t worth it for them. I think the vast majority of people would agree that it’s worth the extra though.

A friend of mine gave me a TV and I want to get it fixed. It turned on but then immediately turned off. There is power running through it but now it just wont turn on. We replaced a fuse in it and my husband said it blew the fuse. So, I am going to take it to get fixed I just need to know an estimate of how much it will cost. Any info would help. Thanks!

Really depends on where you are and who you talk to … if it’s just a blown fuse than the most expensive bill may be time / labor. I would guestimate something in the neighborhood of $ 60 USD ??? ask around – mention you’ve repaired it once before but your husband is deployed – hopefully get a sympathetic ear and inexpensive estimate.

BTW, if it is a repeat issue than the problem may be a faulty power supply, that would cost more in Time / Material / Labor but yield long lasting results.

No one can be sure, but i would think with the new LED tvs, that LCD’s and plasma tv prices are gonna sink like a rock. Samsung, LG, Vizio, (that i know of) already have LED tvs on the market. so i would imagine if you want a LCD, it would be cheaper in april and continually dropping in price.

a 32 inch led-lcd hdtv that goes up to 1080p

my wife and i have a dispute, She constantly leaves the tv on in the bedroom when she goes to bed. its a 42 inch lcd flatscreen hd tv. i say its a waste of electricity she says it doesnt burn enough juice to care about…who is wrong?

You both are, probably, considering that you’re arguing about this.

Look at the back plate of the TV. There should be a sticker there, telling how much power the TV drains when it is on. Multiply that by the hours per month that it is on, that’s how many Wh it uses in a month.

I think you’ll find that if you’re still using incandescent light bulbs, they’re a far larger part of the electricity bill than the LCD TV.
