My friend put a large crack on my 40 inch lcd tv, it cost 800 and the home insurance is covering a replacement. I have to pay 250 pounds excess, well my friend does.
I am allowed to keep the old 1 but is it worth while getting it repaired? I was told it would be around 350 to get it repaired but is there anyway I could get it fixed on the cheap? Or could the parts be sold as it is only the screen damaged?

If it is a 40″ set, I assume it is a projection type and the screen is broken. Only way to be done cheaper is to get the screen assembly yourself and replace it on your own. That can be tricky though. If it is just the screen I would have it repaired if I couldn’t afford the exceess money. The electronics probably are ok, IF IT IS a cracked screen.

Is this a serious question? What do you do about the wiring, the power supply? How do you mount the screen so that it stays in place? This can’t be a serious question.

Most plasmas and LCDs already have a VGA port on them. My LCD was only €399 and I when I hooked my computer up to it, the TV registered as a plug-and-play monitor so there was no messy setup or configuration. A couple of things you’ll notice though are that
A: Because you’re TV is widescreen, you’ll only see half of the window on the vertical so theres a lot of scrolling and
B: You won’t get sound from yuor TV but from the speakers you have on your PC. You can hook your PC up to an amp or hifi system with an “aux in” port and it works just fine. Great for watching all those downloaded films on big screen!

Can you really tell the difference b/t 1080p and 720p in a 32″? I was looking at a Sony 1080p 32″ and have heard mixed reviews about 1080p at that screen size. Are networks broadcasting at 1080p or would it only be for blu-ray?

no it won’t be a huge difference compared to 720p at that screen size. also the only way to receive 1080 signal is from a blu ray player or ps3. networks broadcast in 1080i at best.

I’m thinking of getting a Samsung LE40M86BD (40″ 1080p LCD tv), and was wondering whether i will see any dfference between this tv and another 40″ LCD tv which can only accept 720p/1080i signals. I will be using the TV i buy mainly for gaming on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and will be sitting 5 – 6 feet from it.
Thanks in advance, and I would like it if you have had/ seen both a 1080p and 720p in action and could tell me whether you noticed any difference, so that i can get accurate feedback which will help me choose my TV.

You might want to head over to Best Buy or Circuit City to see the 1080p and 720p across from each other. I’ve found that there are other factors including color, contrast, and brightness that make some models different. But at 20″to 50″, I’m was only able to slightly appreciate the differences between the two.
I have a home theater front projector so on larger screens, the difference is very noticeable and the 1080p for gaming or movies is superior in my humble opinion.

There is a small adapter that is needed. It plugs into the side of your Powerbook into the a/v port. It allows a composite or svhs signal out for video. Phone the Apple store and buy one from them (there’s a lot of types, they’ll make sure you get the right one), took 5 minutes and it was in the mail the next day. You’ll also need an audio out plug that plugs into your headphone jack and goes to the rca type (red & white) in jacks on the tv. All in all, you are talking about $ 25 to $ 50 or so depending on the quality cables you get.
